The Accountant for Psychologists Story
If you’re running a solo-psychology business, have a private practice or work as a contractor, you’re a business owner. You’re responsible for tax, GST, compliance, insurance, and all the elements of a business.
As a psychologist, your expertise is clinical work. Business systems, tax and compliance sit outside what’s taught at university, so it’s understandable if the business side feels a little daunting.
That’s why we set up Accountant for Psychologists:
It started in 2016, when a psychologist with a growing practice in Adelaide came in for tax and business advice.
Working through her numbers revealed the business side of psychology has all sorts of interesting quirks and specific requirements, some of which had been missed or misinterpreted by other accountants.
Together we dug into her business, identified what could be improved, how best to manage tax obligations and set up systems that made her financial life easier. Her practice went from strength to strength (and continues to grow), and she recommended us to a colleague.
Word spread and soon another psychologist came to us, and another.
Each psychologist arrived with questions making it clear psychologists had a pressing need for clear, practical business guidance to cut through the overwhelm.
To simplify what feels overwhelming for psychologists, so that they're free to become the practitioner, business owner, and the person they're capable of being.

In 2024 we set up our website www.AccountantforPsychologists.com.au as a knowledge hub for psychologists.
In 2025 we put together a book, Sorted for Contractor Psychologists for psychologists weighing up whether to go into contracting.

We listened carefully to the questions psychologists asked us. We researched answers with the Australian Tax Office, checked with colleagues in accounting and financial planning and we joined the APS, IPPP and AAPI to stay current with how the profession approaches compliance and practice management. We’re continually adding to that pool of information.
In 2022 we started a monthly newsletter to share tax, finance and business information specifically for psychologists.

By January 2026 we’d spoken with more than 1000 psychologists.
So we set out to create Accountant for Psychologists.
Our original team of Olivia and Kristy as principal accountants and Fairuz as business advisor has grown to include our accountants Wei, Jen and Lyka, our bookkeepers Brooke and Van, and our admin staff Valery, Alif and Rachel.
Together, we help psychologists stay organised, compliant and confident.
