When is my tax return due? What if I don’t get a refund? We’ve got the answers to your top tax time questions.

When is my tax return due?

If you’re lodging it yourself, it's due by 31 October.

If you're lodging through a registered tax agent (like us!) and you’re on our lodgement list, your due date is likely 15 May of the following year.

What happens if I lodge my return late?

You can be fined $330 or more. The ATO may issue a Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalty, which increases the longer it’s overdue. Late lodgement can also delay your refund and affect your ATO history (not great if you're applying for loans or government benefits).  Talk to us if you're concerned.

Will I get a refund?

It depends. If you paid more tax during the year than you actually owed, you’ll get a refund. This often happens if tax was withheld from your income through PAYG, or if your deductions reduce your taxable income significantly.

If you didn’t pay enough tax during the year, or if you have other debts, you might receive a smaller refund — or owe money.

When will I get my refund?

The ATO usually processes returns within 2 weeks, but it can take longer if your return is complex or flagged for review.

Why didn’t I get a refund this year?

There are a few reasons:

  • You may have a tax debt from a previous year

  • Your income increased, and you didn’t pay enough tax

  • Your deductions were lower than in past years

  • Your refund may have been offset against another government debt (like HECS or Centrelink)

I didn’t get a refund and I need to pay a tax bill.  When is my tax bill due?

If you lodge your tax return with a tax agent: the due date for payment is usually 21 days after the notice of assessment is issued.

If you lodget your tax return yourself by 31 October,  payment is usually due 21 November.

What if I can’t pay my tax bill?

Don't panic — you're not alone. If you can’t pay the full amount, the ATO usually allows payment plans. It’s best to get on top of it early to avoid penalties or interest. We can help you set up a payment arrangement and talk to the ATO on your behalf.
